A murky day for mulching

19Jan2026

A very cheering morning up on Wild Maple Field. Together we mulched almost all the hedgerow, it was a good work out pushing a laden wheelbarrow up the field. We shared a really lovely sense of community, as well as helping the wildlife that will soon enjoy the benefits of the native hedgerow. Can't think of a better way to spend a very murky January morning!

All done with radiant smiles on our faces - as we were joined by Alex Fisher (Wild Peak Communities Officer) and Photographer Adam from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. DWT are fantastic friends of Wild Maple Field, and, despite the foggy conditions, they took loads of footage and pictures of our work. Fortunately, Suzanne sent along amazing homemade vegan chocolate brownie biscuits to keep us going through the final hour…

Why Mulch…? Mulching around trees is good for their health as it retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature and enriches the soil as it breaks down, leading to healthier, faster-growing trees by reducing competition for water and nutrients. It creates a protective layer that mimics natural forest conditions, supporting beneficial soil organisms.
