Mulching and re-plug planting

14Feb2026

Another lovely morning on the field, first mulching and then munching in the sunshine. The rooks have been very interested in our new plug-plants and we’ve discovered many of them pulled out of the ground as the rooks look for grubs in the disturbed soil. We’re popping the plants back as fast as we can - shh! Don’t tell the rooks!

As aways, great company and lots achieved for wildlife. Feeling a good job done by 1pm.

Thank you to The Vegan Spice Co and Suzanne Clark for Mumbia Muffins and banana and walnut cake, all vegan and delicious! Food does feature very highly up on the field, we take it very seriously!

Why Mulch…? Mulching around trees is good for their health as it retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature and enriches the soil as it breaks down, leading to healthier, faster-growing trees by reducing competition for water and nutrients. It creates a protective layer that mimics natural forest conditions, supporting beneficial soil organisms.
