Moth trapping

12 July 2025

Ellie joined us to set moth traps overnight which was a wonderful experience for some of our volunteers. It had been a hot day and a very warm night. 17 different species were identified and more than 50 individuals trapped and carefully re-released the next morning, including yellow underwings, rustics and dark arches

Too hot for the planned mammal trapping event to happen, however - we’ve re-scheduled this to later in the year. 6 volunteers helped water the young plants in the early morning before the heat got too intense.

Good successes on the butterfly transects, with WMF receiving a number of mentions in the weekly Derbyshire Butterfly Report produced by Ken Orpe. During the survey in the first week in July, a total of 147 individuals were spotted. Skippers that were confined to the limestone bank area last year are all over the Field this summer.
